Calculate what you need
A simple 3-month supply for 1 person: 25 lbs rice, 25 lbs dried beans/lentils, 10 lbs oats, 5 lbs pasta, canned vegetables and fruits (30-40 cans), cooking oil, salt, sugar, and comfort foods. Multiply by your household size.
Buy a little extra each week
Don't try to buy everything at once. Add $20-30 of extra staples to your regular shopping each week. Buy the biggest bags of rice, beans, and oats — they cost significantly less per pound than smaller packages.
Store it properly
Keep food in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Dry goods (rice, beans, oats) stay fresh 1-5 years in sealed containers. Transfer large bags to airtight buckets or containers to keep pests out.
Label everything with date
